For the first time, the UW Board of Regents has approved laying off a tenured professor based on program cuts. The board was granted that authority in 2016, and recently backed letting go an associate profressor at UW-Platteville. Previously, if a program or department was phased out, tenured faculty had to be placed in a different position and could only be laid off under a campus-wide financial emergency. The Regents policy has added program elimination as a reason to lay off tenured faculty. UW-Platteville decided 2 years ago to discontinue its early childhood program and approved its elimination last spring. Removing that program resulted in the employee’s lay off – which takes effect in May. The name of the professor was not included in the announcement.
