A majority of people at a Monday night meeting in Hazel Green voted in favor of the Southwestern School District spending $1.29 million to purchase 92 acres of land in anticipation of future growth. School district officials held a meeting of the electors to vote on the purchase of the land, which is adjacent to the middle school/high school building. The district already had submitted an offer for the purchase to close by April 15, dependent on voter approval. A simple majority was needed to approve the purchase, and 89 people voted in favor, or 59%. That compared to 63 people who voted against it, or 41%. School district officials plan to retain about 22 acres directly west of the high school and sell the remaining 70 acres.
