Floodwaters are creeping up towards homes in Prairie Du Chien, as the Mississippi River rises closer to its expected crest of around 24 feet. Volunteers and residents have spent the past few days filling and placing sandbags around homes and buildings near the river. Some homeowners say their basements are already under several feet of water. Crawford County Emergency Management Specialist Marc Myhre says the efforts to keep sandbags stacked may continue. Volunteers have sent out roughly 90 pickup trucks full of sandbags. People who aren’t able to pick up sandbags themselves can put in requests for sandbags by calling the Prairie Du Chien Chamber of Commerce at (608) 326-8555.
