On Thursday June 1, at around 1pm, the Grant County Sheriff’s office responded to an accident in which a pick–up truck collided with a UTV on County Highway A in Ellenboro. 61 year old Kent Winkers of Lancaster was operating his UTV and was facing westbound on the eastbound shoulder at his mailbox retrieving his mail. From a stopped position on the east shoulder, Winkers made a right hand turn across both lanes of traffic, attempting to drive the UTV into his driveway. At the same time, 63 year Kevin Campbell of Bloomington was traveling west in a truck on County Highway A. Winkers pulled out in front of Campbell’s vehicle. The front driver’s side of Campbell’s vehicle struck the passenger side of the UTV. Winkers was ejected from the UTV and suffered life-threatening injuries. County Highway A was closed for an hour while crews worked at the scene. Winkers was taken to UW Health in Madison via med flight for life-threatening injuries. Campbell was not injured in the crash.
