Bat Found In Galena Tests Positive For Rabies

Jo Davies County Health Department officials are warning the public to be cautious around wild animals that may carry rabies after a bat in the county was found to have the disease. The Illinois Department of Public Health has confirmed that a bat in Galena tested positive for rabies. Changes in any animal’s normal behavior, such as a bat that is active during the day, found on the ground or unable to fly, can be signs of rabies. A press release cautions residents not to handle such animals. If residents find a bat inside their home, they should try to cover it with a container and contact Jo Daviess County Animal Control at 815-776-0326 to discuss whether it should be tested for rabies.
