John Lithgow is in final negotiations to play Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s highly-anticipated series adaptation of the Harry Potter books. The series, set to span over a decade, will be a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s novels and will delve deep into each book. While some may question the 79-year-old Lithgow’s suitability as an American playing a beloved British character, the actor has enjoyed several Emmy-winning performances and stage roles as British personalities. The Harry Potter TV series, slated to debut on HBO in late 2026 or early 2027, will be filmed at the same studio as the movies and has received 32,000 audition tapes for the lead child roles.
