Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District Representative Derrick Van Orden is calling for a significant change to the state’s election calendar, proposing the elimination of spring elections entirely. In a recent interview with Wisconsin Eye, Van Orden, expressed frustration with what he sees as chronically low Republican turnout in spring elections and questioned the efficiency of holding multiple elections throughout the year. When asked about what goes wrong in Wisconsin elections Van Orden said, “Republicans don’t vote, period.” The congressman’s solution is straightforward: eliminate spring elections altogether and consolidate them into existing election cycles. Van Orden pointed to several practical concerns with the current system, including voter fatigue and financial considerations.
