For 21 years, Special Olympics has been a centerpiece of Ellen Green’s life. Her dedication to both athletics and her community recently earned her the designation of Special Olympics Iowa’s Athlete of the Year. The award is given to athletes who display spirit, selflessness, courage and sportsmanship. Ellen Green, who has Down syndrome, was awarded the designation during the 2025 Special Olympics Iowa Summer Games, where more than 2,500 athletes, 1,200 coaches and 2,000 volunteers gathered in Ames, Iowa, on May 22-24. While receiving the award was a highlight for the athlete, her enjoyment while participating in the Special Olympics comes from working with a team she regards as family. Composed of 41 Special Olympic athletes and two coaches. Ellen competes in basketball, bowling, golf, biking and the softball throw.
