New bill could bring AI interpreters to Wisconsin courtrooms

A new bill could bring AI to Wisconsin courtrooms. The proposed legislation would allow courts to use artificial intelligence, or a machine assisted translation service during civil and criminal proceedings. The service would be used in addition to, or instead of human interpreters.  Under state law, anyone with limited English proficiency has the right to an interpreter. People with disabilities also have the right to an interpreter under federal law.  Interpreters can be costly and difficult to come by. Not only do they need to speak another language, but they’re also required to understand the legal process. Using AI could give more people a chance to utilize translation services.
