Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin are three of the 46 states and U.S. territories ordered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to remove references to gender ideology from federally funded Personal Responsibility Education Program materials within 60 days. Millions in federal grant funding is at stake if those states and territories fail to comply. The demand, issued through HHS’s Administration for Children and Families, follows the termination of California’s PREP grant after the state failed to comply with a similar request. States that do not follow the directive could face withholding, suspension, or termination of federal funding. The Trump administration says the move is intended to ensure PREP programs reflect congressional intent and prevent children from being exposed to what it calls “dangerous ideological agendas.”
