Local farmers gathered at a Westby farm Wednesday to voice concerns about mounting agricultural challenges that are putting financial pressure on regional producers. The listening session took place at Darin and Jo Ann Von Ruden’s farm, where farmers discussed how tariffs and other agricultural obstacles are creating stress throughout the farming community. Local elected officials attended the event to hear directly from constituents about their struggles. Brian Kuehl, executive director of Farmers for Free Trade said farmers are struggling because they’re not selling soybeans or corn and commodity prices are low while input prices are high. The Westby gathering was part of the nationwide Motorcade for Trade Tour, an initiative organized by Farmers for Free Trade to highlight agricultural concerns across rural America.
