More than 50 people gathered at the Grant County Democrats’ office Thursday to hear U.S. Representative Mark Pocan speak on federal issues. Pocan, representing Wisconsin’s 2nd Congressional District, criticized Republican Congressman Derrick Van Orden from the neighboring 3rd District for not holding any public town halls in three years. Pocan emphasized the importance of connecting with constituents and addressing how Washington legislation affects their daily lives. Van Orden responded by accusing Pocan of neglecting his duties in Washington and defended his stance on government-funded health care for undocumented immigrants. Pocan also addressed the government shutdown, attributing it to Republican withdrawals from previously agreed funding deals, and discussed the impact of Trump-era tariffs on energy and agriculture costs. The event included a Q&A where Pocan spoke about presidential overreach and cuts to education and health care programs, calling for restored government checks and balances. Pocan said these issues resonate with him personally due to his family’s experiences.
