Every year Dubuque hosts more than 300 athletes and Unified partners for the annual Special Olympics Winter Games. Throughout the day on Monday and Tuesday athletes competed in Alpine skiing, cross country skiing and snow shoeing. City of Dubuque Parks & Recreation Director, Matthew Kalcevich welcomed athletes to Dubuque during the opening ceremony on Monday night.
The mission of Special Olympics Iowa is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. In May of last year an athlete from Dubuque, Ellen Green, was named Iowa Special Olympics Athlete of the Year.
