Authorities in Platteville are alerting area residents about a utility scam that recently targeted someone in the city. Police say a resident got a phone call from a scammer claiming to be with Alliant Energy. A social media post by Platteville Police says the target did receive a legitimate written notice from Alliant that staff would be inspecting a meter for upgrades. However, during the call, the victim said the scammers informed him that a past-due bill had to be paid before any upgrades could be done to the meter. The caller told the victim to pay using a pre-paid card. The scammer hung up once the number on that card was given to them. Residents are reminded not to share any personal or financial information unless they are certain of who they are talking to.
