The Grant County Sherrif’s Department has released more information regarding a plane crash in a cornfield between Boscobel and Woodman on Saturday. The Grant County Communication Center was notified of a plane crash around 1:30pm by O’Hare Airport in Chicago. Sheriff’s deputies and Boscobel Police responded and began searching for the downed aircraft. The pilot, 22 year old Colten Jaekel of Coon Valley, Wisconsin was advised to call 9-1-1 on his cell phone to provide his location to the sheriff’s office. Once Jaekel called 911, his location was known and officers located him and the aircraft in a cornfield in Marion Township. It was confirmed that Jaekel wasn’t injured and he reported that he began losing RMP’s over Fennimore. Jaekel stated he began descending 500 feet per minute while he was flying at 4500 feet. Jaekel attempted to make it to the Boscobel airport, but was unsuccessful. He located a cornfield, where he landed the aircraft safely. Jaekel stated he broadcasted a “MAYDAY” on an emergency channel, which was received by the O’Hare Tower. The matter is under investigation by the FAA, which the Grant County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the investigation.
