Gov. Evers declares today ‘Barry Alvarez Day’ as Badgers AD retires

MADISON, Wis. — University of Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez is getting one last honor on his last day before retirement.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has declared June 30, 2021 as “Barry Alvarez Day,” marking the legendary coach’s lasting impact on the state.

Earlier this year, Alvarez announced his retirement after more than three decades in Madison, both as the Badgers’ football coach from 1990 to 2005 and athletic director from 2004 until this year.

Alvarez led the Badgers to a 119-74-4 record as head coach, winning three Big Ten conference championships and three Rose Bowls. During Alvarez’s time as athletic director, Badger teams across all sports won a combined 16 team national titles, 25 individual national titles and 74 conference championships.

The university hired longtime deputy athletic director Chris McIntosh as Alvarez’s replacement earlier this month. McIntosh officially begins the job on July 1st.
