The union representing correctional officers and staff at a northwest Illinois prison claims that sexual assaults and misconduct against employees is rampant there. The American Federation of Government Employees alleges that there were 971 incidents of inmates engaging in sexual misconduct against staff in 2020 at the Thomson federal prison, another 535 such incidents in 2021, and 275 so far this year. The union states that the incidents contribute to difficulty recruiting and retaining staff at the prison.
