“Coming off a very disappointing season where I don’t think anybody expected this, but it’s here, and you’ve always got to get to the truth of the matter, and the bottom line is what we did this season was not good enough, so there’s obviously a lot of room for improvement,” LaFleur said.
Despite up-and-down performances all year from both the defense and offense, LaFleur said he believes continuity is a key to winning in the NFL, and because of that, he expects many of the faces on his staff to remain the same — including defensive coordinator Joe Barry, whose future was the subject of questions from reporters.
“We’re at the initial stages of all of the evaluations, and quite frankly I don’t anticipate a whole lot — if any — staff changes at all. I do think there’s something there to the guys that we have here in this building,” LaFleur said. “Certainly, I think there are things that all of us can improve upon, most notably myself, but I do believe in the people not only in the locker room but our coaching staff and you know, like I said, are there a lot of things we have to improve upon, absolutely, no doubt about it. But it’s my intention to try to have everybody back.”
The Packers’ defense struggled for much of the year, but seemed to turn a corner after the team’s bye week late in the season and played a large role in helping the team crawl back to the edge of the playoff race despite a 4-8 start. Green Bay’s defense ended the year ranked near the middle of the pack in terms of both points and yards allowed per game, ranking 17th out of 32 teams.
