‘Cookie Wars’ fundraiser benefits family of ‘Ultimate Hockey Dad’ who died last month

MADISON, Wis. — Two high school hockey programs came together Tuesday evening to raise money to support a Vel Phillips Memorial High School student-athlete whose father, a fixture in the stands, died suddenly last month.

Memorial and Madison West High School teams hosted the “Cookie Wars,” a competitive fundraiser to see which school could sell the most cookies during Tuesday’s hockey game.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the family of Eric Feinstein, whose son Caden plays for Memorial. Eric Feinstein, known for his contagious energy when cheering on the Spartans, died on Dec. 29.

“I had spoken to Eric’s wife and I had said — at one point we were talking last week — and I said this is a true symbol of how many people Eric has touched and impacted their lives, that this many people have come together to support both high schools,” fellow hockey parent and former coworker of Feinstein’s Jamie Beyler said.

Hy-Vee in Fitchburg donated the cookies for the event.

Both teams took part in a similar cookie war previously, splitting the proceeds between them.
