As of Wednesday morning the Mississippi River is at 22.63 feet at Prairie du Chien. The current level is still the third highest level behind 2001 at 23.75 feet and the historic crest of April 22, 1969 with a crest of 21.58 feet. The latest projections from the National Weather Service have the river reaching a level at or near 24.0 feet by Saturday afternoon with a gradual decline to 23.2 feet by Tuesday. Sandbagging is continuing at the Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution while orders continue to come in. A secondary sandbagging location on North Prairie Street is currently up and running with volunteers and city and county staff. There have been approximately 30,000 bags of sand filled and delivered where requested. Prairie du Chien Mayor Dave Hemmer has declared all roads that are barricaded closed except for residents who may live in the area.
