Area officials said they are encouraged by the relatively high rate of leisure travel that took place out of Dubuque Regional Airport last year as efforts continue to further bolster service. A total of 19,022 commercial enplanements were recorded at the airport last year, according to local officials. Nearly all those passengers flew with Avelo Airlines, a low-cost carrier that launched its flights between Dubuque and Orlando, Fla., last spring and later added — and subsequently eliminated — a twice weekly flight to Las Vegas, Nev. Despite those schedule changes, Dubuque Mayor Brad Cavanagh said the city’s agreement with Avelo was “absolutely worth the investment” because it helped the city maintain more than 10,000 yearly enplanements — an essential number for securing federal funding. Airports above that total receive $1 million in federal funding annually from the Airport Improvement Program. Those below 10,000 annual enplanements receive $150,000.
