The Dubuque City Council this week officially signed off on a vision for the Central Avenue and White Street corridor from downtown to the North End, opting for modest revisions that enhance livability while keeping vehicle traffic patterns about the same. The plan calls for street parking to be removed on the left side of Central and White to make way for wider sidewalks, trees and a bicycle track along White Street. Traffic lanes also would be narrowed with the goal of slowing traffic through the old U.S. 52 corridor. The updated plan has a total cost estimate of $20 million, along with a prescribed timeline of six phases that extends through 2037. The first phase, tentatively scheduled for 2026 or 2027, would be a simple restriping of the full length of the corridor from Fourth Street to 22nd Street.
