Farmers and the agriculture community have concerns as southern Wisconsin has seen a lack of snow this season. Dan Smith with UW Extension’s integrated pest and crop management, says the recent snowfall is good for their crops, but it may not be enough to keep crops like alfalfa, wheat, and small grains from winter kill. Snow helps insulate crops, in dry conditions, the crops can get dehydrated and undergo stress. This can damage the crops heading into spring or impact the quality and hydration of the soil.
