Wisconsin’s biennial budget is now in the hands of the Republican state lawmakers who control both legislative chambers. However, Democrats, including Governor Tony Evers, are expressing concern over the potential impact federal funding freezes will have on the state budget process. The governor is proposing setting aside $500 million in the state budget for Wisconsin to be able to respond to the Trump’s administration’s actions. Democrats stand by Evers’ proposal. From Medicaid to research funding, state Democrats want to preempt President Donald Trump’s potential sweeping federal funding freezes. However, Republicans say there is no need for this. On Tuesday, when Vos was asked if these federal funding freezes would impact the Republican’s budget drafting process, he responded with one word, “No.” Vos said. Wisconsin Republicans have already committed to scrapping the governor’s policy proposals in the budget, before drafting their own version.
