U.S. Marshals Service officials are warning residents of imposter scams reported in Iowa. A press release from the U.S. Marshals Service of the Northern District of Iowa states that Iowa residents have reported receiving calls from individuals claiming to be U.S. marshals, court officers or other law enforcement officials. According to the release, scammers might tell those who answer their calls that criminal subpoenas or court-related documents are pending against them. They might then request payments to avoid court appearances or attempt to collect a fine in lieu of arrest for offenses like failing to report for jury duty. Those owing fines will always be contacted via official mail first or contacted in person, and those who have business with the court, whether it is a criminal or civil subpoena or any other pending case, will be contacted in person by law enforcement professionals. Residents who receive such scam calls are urged to report the calls to the local U.S. Marshals Service office at 319-362-4411 and to the Federal Trade Commission.
