The Grant County Sheriff’s Department and the Platteville Police have received multiple calls regarding a text message scam. The message claims to be from the DMV regarding unpaid traffic violations and states that if you don’t pay the traffic ticket immediately action will be taken against your license. If you have received this message, do NOT click the link. Scams can be identified by their false sense of urgency, inaccurate information present, and by the email that sent it. In the case of these texts, the email is not a .gov address and they do not list the full name for the DMV, Department of Motor Vehicles versus Department of Vehicles. Local authorities are aware of the scam, and recipients can report the messages through the Federal Trade Commission. The Grant County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind residents never to share personal or banking information over the phone. If you have fallen victim to one of these scams, you can report the financial or identity loss to the local sheriff’s department.
