One man is dead and a Dubuque County Sheriff’s Deputy is hurt following a shooting during what county officials called a “high-risk traffic stop” early Tuesday morning. It happened just before 4:30 a.m. after deputies stopped a vehicle on Highway 151 just north of the Highway 136 interchange near Cascade. Dubuque County Sheriff Joe Kennedy said in a press release the unnamed adult male produced a gun and that shots were fired. The release did not say exactly what happened but both a Dubuque County Sheriff’s Deputy and the suspect were shot. The deputy was taken to MercyOne Emergency Department in Dubuque and then to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and is in serious, but stable condition. The man died shortly after being transported from the scene. Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is now investigating the shooting. Kennedy says there is no danger to the public and that the deputies and officers involved are on critical incident leave. The sheriff’s office worked with Dubuque Police Department, Iowa State Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Monticello Police Department, and Jones County Sheriff’s Office on the traffic stop. Highway 151 was closed for more than six hours while officers investigated the scene.
