Both Republican and Democratic state lawmakers are urging Governor Tony Evers (D-WI) to sign two bills that would give gig workers in Wisconsin more benefits. Right now, drivers for delivery and rideshare companies, like DoorDash, Uber and Instacart, are classified as independent contractors, not employees, which limits the benefits to which they have access. This legislation would let the companies contribute to “portable benefit accounts” that workers could use for health care, sick time or retirement. The lawmakers who wrote the legislation say they haven’t gotten an indication from Gov. Evers about whether he will sign or veto the bills.
