A crash in Mineral Point led to the death of a bicyclist and the road being closed for almost five hours. On Thursday, at approximately 5:45 AM, the Iowa County Emergency 911 Center received a report of a vehicle versus bicycle crash with the bicyclist seriously injured. Bystanders attempted life-saving measures and the bicyclist was transported to Upland Hills Health in Dodgeville where he was pronounced deceased. The cyclist was identified as 68-year-old Garth Sheel of Mineral Point. Sheel was riding his bike on Dodge St just south of Commerce Street wearing dark clothes with minimal reflective equipment on his bicycle. A truck with a plow attached driven by 26-year-old Lane Eggers of Mineral Point was driving the same direction as Sheel when the plow struck Sheel. Eggers has been cooperative with the investigators and the roadway reopened around 10:30 AM. The Mineral Point Police Department is leading the investigation and asks that anyone that witnesses or has information regarding the crash to contact them. The crash remains under investigation. This is Iowa County’s seventh fatal crash in 2025.
