Gov. Tony Evers signed a key bill supporting Wisconsin’s FoodShare program on Monday, according to a release. Assembly Bill 180, now 2025 Wisconsin Act 116, is designed to reduce FoodShare payment errors and aimed at saving Wisconsin taxpayers from potentially having to pay “‘hundreds of millions of dollars in penalty fees to the Trump Administration due to new changes under Republicans’ ‘Big Beautiful Bill.’” Over 700,000 Wisconsinites, including 270,000 children, receive assistance through FoodShare. According to Evers, the appropriated funds include $32.3 million to cover the increase in the state’s share of administrative costs that came from the ‘Big Beautiful Bill.’ It will also direct the Department of Health Services to request and implement any waivers necessary to prohibit FoodShare enrollees from purchasing soft drinks, energy drinks and candy with their benefits.
