LaFleur: Packers want Rodgers back ‘in the worst way’

GREEN BAY, Wis. — As rookie minicamps get underway for the Green Bay Packers, the organization is still facing questions about whether Aaron Rodgers will be back this season.

Reports of Rodgers’ unhappiness with the organization and his reluctance to return for another year in the green and gold first surfaced during the NFL Draft and have continued ever since. But the Packers have insisted they want the reigning NFL MVP back under center this year, and that was a point head coach Matt LaFleur reiterated Friday.

“Nothing new to update,” LaFleur said when asked about Rodgers’ status with the team Friday. “We obviously feel the same way. You know, we want him back in the worst way. I know he knows that, and we’ll continue to work at it each and every day.”

Rodgers still has not spoken publicly about the reported rift, other than telling NBC Sports off-camera that he was disappointed the disagreements had become public. Rodgers reportedly has not ruled out retiring if changes are not made to his liking or he is not traded.

If Rodgers does not return, last year’s first round pick Jordan Love would be the presumptive starter. The team also signed veteran Blake Bortles to a one-year contract earlier this week.
