Mineral Point advances to Div. 4 girls state final

Senior center Jessica Schultz scored 16 points and added 12  rebounds to lead Mineral Point past Regis, 77-56 in a WIAA State Division Four girls basketball tournament game at Resch Center Thursday evening.

Clara Chambers led the Pointers (25-2) with 19 points and Sydney Staver chipped in with 16 points as Mineral Point broke open a close game just before halftime to take a 40-27 lead at intermission.

Mineral Point will face Kenosha St. Joseph’s Academy in the Division Four championship game Saturday. The Lancers defeated Marathon in the other semifinal game Thursday, 61-59.

Edgewood suffered a 50-49 loss to Hayward in the Division Three semifinals.

The Crusaders had a 12-point lead in the first half, but Hayward scored the last six points of the half to trail 30-24 at intermission.

Edgewood had a four-point lead in the final minute, but Hayward rallied again. Madelyn Neff hit two free throws with six seconds left and Edgewood’s desperation shot at the buzzer fell short.

Estella Moschkau led the Crusaders with 20 points and 13 rebounds. 

Neff led the Hurricanes with 23 points.

Hayward will face Milwaukee School of Languages in the Division Three championship game Saturday. 

The Hawks defeated Xavier, 48-34 in the other semifinal Thursday.
