Bossert is hard of hearing – she has no hearing in her right ear and can hear muffled sound in her left ear, so at each timeout, Ritchie, an interpreter, enters the Mineral Point huddle, listens to Wainwright’s instructions and signs the information to Bossert.
“I usually depend on a lot of her lip reading,” Bossert said. “So if I’m farther away from the coach, I will look at her and rely on her most of the time instead of the coach”
“She’s overcome a lot of insecurities and self-confidence just being with all hearing peers,” Ritchie said. “You know it’s hard for her. and she’s really worked hard to prove herself and show that she can do anything.”
Bossert has started 24 of 25 games for the Pointers this season averaging 3.5 points per game.
“Hopefully, other people will look at this and say, you know, maybe I don’t like the cards I was dealt with but I’m going to play them and I can be just as successful as somebody like Cassie Bossert,” Wainwright said.
