Paris Olympics organizers apologized for the tableau during the opening ceremony that sparked criticism from religious conservatives for resembling Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” However, they insisted that the segment, featuring LGBTQ+ icon DJ Barbara Butch surrounded by drag queens, was actually inspired by a similar painting depicting the Greek Gods on Mount Olympus. It was meant to celebrate diversity and pay tribute to “festivity” and French gastronomy. “My wish isn’t to be subversive, nor to mock or to shock,”director Thomas Jolly said. “Most of all, I wanted to send a message of love, a message of inclusion and not at all to divide.” (ET)
