After three years, a major road improvement project in Galena is complete. State and local officials this week announced the completion of work on U.S. 20/Illinois 84, known as Spring Street as it passes through Galena. The $31.5 million project spanned three construction seasons and reconstructed the road between Main Street and Gear Street, removing the old roadway and installing new pavement that includes left turn lanes at various side streets. Improvements also included curbs and gutters, storm sewers, retaining walls, relocated water/sanitary facilities and a shared-use walking and bike path. The project’s work zone included more than 50 buildings within Galena’s National Register Historic District. IDOT officials worked with the city and the State Historic Preservation Office to reconstruct retaining walls with aesthetic treatments and dye the pavement to match Galena’s historic stone and brick.
