Nearly 60 thousand pounds of unwanted medications were returned on Wisconsin’s spring Drug Take Back Day. Over 135 law enforcement groups took part in the day, with 59,840 pounds of medication being returned and disposed of. The state also has nearly 500 permanent drug disposal boxes, which can be used year-round. Drug Take Back Days help residents get rid of unwanted pills and other medications in a safe manner, instead of flushing them down a toilet or pouring them down the drain. Officials said water reclamation facilities are not equipped to remove the drugs, and they can end up in rivers and lakes.
