Prairie du Chien Schools face drastic cuts

The Prairie du Chien school district says it will have to make drastic cuts if the community does not pass a referendum to generate more money for the school district. Prairie du Chien voters defeated a referendum in November to generate two-million dollars for the school district through higher taxes. The district’s enrollment is low and dropping, costs are increasing, and a public vote to generate more money failed in November. Now the district is hosting public meetings discussing how the district could solve its financial woes. The first option is putting another referendum to the public in April. If a new referendum fails it would mean more than 1.4 million dollars in cuts are needed. It would come in the form of cutting staff, school programs, athletics, and a lot more. The school district has until January 13th to decide whether it will bring a new referendum to the voters in April.
