The Platteville Common Council has determined that the Grant County Humane Society is responsible for paying over $16,000 in property taxes on the building it purchased last year. While the Grant County Humane Society is a tax-exempt nonprofit, the property it purchased in May 2023 in Platteville was not previously tax exempt. The humane society closed on the property after March 1, 2023, which made it ineligible for property tax exemption in 2024. The humane society asked the council to waive its 2024 tax bill. Organization leaders say they were unaware the nonprofit would owe the taxes and said they were never informed about it. The council denied that request this week in a 6-1 vote. Now that the City Council made its decision, the humane society says it will pay the bill as soon as it can.
