The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department is recognizing three first responders who happened upon a crash while off-duty and likely saved a life. On Monday, there was a two-vehicle head-on crash on Highway 81 east of County M in Lamont and one of the vehicles caught fire. An off-duty Lafayette County deputy, and off-duty Darlington Fire Department member, and an off-duty municipal officer happened upon the scene. The off-duty fire department member had an extinguisher in their vehicle, which the three used to help free an incapacitated elderly female from the burning vehicle. The woman was transported to a local hospital and then med–fighted to UW Madison. The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department is recognizing the heroic actions of the off-duty responders for saving the woman’s life.
