One person has died after a head-on collision that occurred on Highway 27 in Christiana on Wednesday. 82-year-old John LeRoy Shimpach of Boscobel was driving on Highway 27 near Paulson Road around noon when he crossed the centerline and hit a northbound military vehicle head-on. Shimpach was pronounced dead on scene. The military vehicle, an Oshkosh Defense Medium Tactical Vehicle, sustained disabling damage and was removed by the Maneuver Area Training Equipment Site at Fort McCoy. The driver and passenger of this vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital by another vehicle in their convoy. Soldiers traveling in the military convoy were on a training from the Illinois National Guard 6/54th Security Force Assistance Brigade. Highway 27 was closed in both directions for several hours due to the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
