A deputy medical examiner for Dane County has called the death of jogger Nicholas Day of Mount Horeb an “extremely brutal homicide.” That evaluation came during a preliminary hearing Tuesday for 21-year-old Riley Berg of Mount Horeb. The M-E says Day was shot, then suffered 11 stab wounds from a sharp object, including having his throat cut. Berg’s father has told investigators his son is being treated for schizophrenia. Day had enrolled at UW-Platteville but recently dropped out. Doctor Eli Goodman says Day could have survived the gunshot wound, but the attack that followed cost him his life.
