The Wisconsin DHS is celebrating 50 years of the WIC program providing low-income families and their children with the necessary food and support. WIC is a special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants, and children under the age of five. Governor Tony Evers marked the 50 years of this program on Wednesday as Wisconsin WIC Day. A chief medical officer with the DHS, DR. Jasmine Zapata, said it’s important to take these five decades and celebrate people who have not only served families in this program, but also acknowledge the families who have benefited from it. Currently, there are 61 sites across the state that serve more than 90,000 people per month. However, this number could be even higher.
