Recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey shows the previous states of residence of new residents in area counties from 2018 through 2022. While the data shows a healthy exchange of residents between Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois, newcomers’ former states of residence are geographically diverse. After Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois, the most common state of origin for newcomers to Dubuque and Delaware counties in Iowa was Minnesota, as was the case in Grant County, Wis. For Clayton County, Iowa, Florida took that spot. In Jo Daviess County, Ill., it was Indiana. From 2018 through 2022, Census Bureau data shows Dubuque County with an annual estimated influx of 1,368 new residents from other parts of Iowa, 1,070 from Illinois, 562 from Wisconsin, 175 from Minnesota, 142 from Texas and 137 from Colorado. No other state of origin cracks three digits.
