The daughter of Wisconsin State Sen. Jesse James of Altoona was formally charged Monday with stealing more than $32,000 from his campaign account while serving as his treasurer. 30-year-old Elizabeth Ann Johnson of Eau Claire, faces one felony count of theft in a business setting and three felony counts of intentionally filing false campaign finance reports. Johnson allegedly made 13 unauthorized cash withdrawals from the “Friends of Jesse James” campaign account between Jan. 30 and Sept. 12, 2024, totaling $32,000. James discovered the missing funds in November 2024 when he found the account balance was much lower than expected and reported it to police. According to the criminal complaint, during a police interview, Johnson admitted to taking the money to support her struggling business.
