Authorities have charged a 17-year-old from Shullsburg with a hate crime. Officials say Jason Leitzinger faces a charge of criminal damage to property after he spray painted racist graffiti on a home. His charge would normally be classified as a misdemeanor – however it has been elevated to a felony due to a hate crime modifier. According to a police report, Leitzinger and a 15-year-old spray painted the word “deported” and drew a swastika on the home’s door. Officials say that Leitzinger is scheduled to appear in Lafayette County Circuit Court on November 4th.
