Family Advocates begin moving into new space

As employees and residents of a Platteville domestic violence shelter move into their new space, shelter staff are focused on creating an improved “space to heal.”  Family Advocates this month began their move to a new 14,000-square-foot building at 305 Eastside Road. The organization serves victims of domestic and sexual violence in Grant, Lafayette and Iowa counties.  The new 10-bedroom building will replace the nonprofit’s former shelter on Platteville’s Court Street, which had seven bedrooms and less than 4,000 square feet of space. The move recently began with the relocation of administrative offices, and shelter residents are expected to move in as early as this week.  Family Advocates broke ground on the new building last May. The $3.6 million project was funded in large part by a $3.5 million federal grant awarded to the city of Platteville in 2022.  Platteville City Manager Clint Langreck explained that the grant was awarded for the shelter project, so the city acted as a sort of municipal “in between” that received the money and funneled it toward Family Advocates.  The remainder of the funding was raised through charitable donations.
