The CDC confirmed the presumptive positive human case of bird flu found in Barron County this week, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services said Friday. The DHS first announced the case on Wednesday, saying a person who was exposed to an infected flock had contracted the virus. The department also said it was monitoring other farm workers in Barron County who might have been exposed. The country’s first severe human case of bird flu was reported in Louisiana on Wednesday. California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency earlier this week because of the virus’ spread among cattle in that state. The DHS said earlier this week that the risk of exposure for the general public remains low, though people who work with infected birds, poultry or cows are at higher risk.
