A southbound BNSF train caught fire Saturday, prompting road closures and a multi-agency response in the Township of Prairie du Chien, according to a news release from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office. The Crawford County Communications Center received multiple reports of smoke and flames coming from the rear locomotive of the train. Railroad personnel safely stopped the train at the intersection of County Road K and Highway 35. The Rural Bridgeport and Prairie du Chien Fire Department responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the fire, which is believed to have been caused by a mechanical malfunction. Portions of Limery Road and County Road K were closed for several hours while emergency crews worked at the scene.
