The Iowa County Sheriff’s Department is advising residents of a recent phone scam in the area. The scammers are calling people claiming to be with the Sheriff’s Office and telling people they have missed jury duty and may have a warrant or face arrest. Scammers may use the names of actual law enforcement officers and can even spoof caller ID to make the call appear to come from a legitimate Sheriff’s Office number. Law enforcement will not call you and demand immediate payment to avoid arrest for missing jury duty. If you get a call do not provide personal or financial information and do not send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.
