Viroqua farmer dead after getting trapped in grain bin

A 74-year-old Viroqua farmer died Tuesday after becoming trapped in a grain bin on his farm, according to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office. Emergency crews were called to Ackman’s farm on Cherry Grove Road in  Viroqua shortly before 12:30 p.m. for a report of a farmer possibly trapped inside a grain bin. The bin was being unloaded so shelled corn could be transported from the farm when the grain caked or “bridged.” Investigators believe 74-year-old Raymond Ackman entered the bin to help get the grain flowing into the unloading auger when the grain collapsed around him, trapping him beneath a large amount of corn. Ackman was located and freed from the grain after extensive rescue efforts but died at the scene.
